RUDE

RUDE

A crisis of democracy is looming in European democracies as populism and polarization grow, and democratic legitimacy declines. The RUDE project investigates a special dimension of this phenomenon: a political and perhaps cultural divide between rural and urban areas.

Urban-rural residency affects European citizens' legitimacy beliefs, social identities, perceptions of injustice and threat, political and social attitudes, and political behavior. RUDE uses a comparative study of all European countries with an in-depth analysis of five established European democracies to explore the role of shifting identities and their consequences for democratic governance and political representation, as well as the role of globalization.
